The rare one, the Corniche
A reef two and a half kilometres off Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Belharra only breaks on the rare winter pulse. Some years it does not break at all. First ridden in 2002. You watch from the Corniche with binoculars. You do not paddle from the beach.
When.
November to March
West and northwest swell in winter. It has to be a once-a-season pulse.
Worth knowing.
- 1. Watch from the Route de la Corniche between Socoa and Hendaye. That is how almost everyone sees it.
- 2. This is boat or ski water. There is no beach paddle.
- 3. Some winters it never shows. That is the wave, not a bad forecast.
- 4. On a small swell the same reef is a dive site. Do not confuse those two days.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
