The Sentinel, Hout Bay
A big-wave reef off the Sentinel, Hout Bay. Dungeons is boat water, cold, and in the same stretch of coast as the seals and the whites. Most people watch from Chapman's Peak or the harbour. The paddle is not a lookout.
When.
May to September
Southwest swell in the Cape winter. It has to be a real pulse.
Worth knowing.
- 1. Watch from Chapman's Peak or a boat. That is the right call if you are not a regular.
- 2. This is not a beach paddle. The reef sits off the Sentinel in open water.
- 3. Great whites hunt this coast. That is documented, not folklore.
- 4. Winter is the only season that matters. A small day at Dungeons is just a reef in the swell.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
