La Santa, the lava barrel
A hollow reef at La Santa, Lanzarote. El Quemao is the Canary wave that throws on lava and does not care how pretty the island looks from the road. The village is a wind town. The reef is the reason surfers stop.
When.
October to March
North swell in winter. The reef is shallow. Watch a set from the rocks.
Worth knowing.
- 1. Watch from the rocks at La Santa. The takeoff is closer to the dry lava than you want.
- 2. This is not a beginner island wave. The rest of Lanzarote has softer looks if this is not yours.
- 3. Winter is the window. The wind will try to ruin the afternoon. Morning is the bet.
- 4. Booties help. The reef is lava, not sand.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
