The head, the Irish big wave
A big-wave reef off Mullaghmore Head, Sligo. The Atlantic stands up on the north side of the point. Tow teams and a few paddlers. The village is small. The days it breaks, the headland is the cheap seat.
When.
October to March
North Atlantic swell in winter. It has to be a solid, long-period pulse.
Worth knowing.
- 1. Watch from the head. You will know if it is on before anyone waxes a gun.
- 2. This is not a town beach. The reef is off the point in open water.
- 3. Winter is the only window. A small day here is just a pretty headland.
- 4. The village is the base. Bring a hood. The water is not Portugal.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
