Lion Rock, west Auckland
Black sand on Auckland's west coast, Lion Rock in the middle of the beach. Piha is the city wave that still feels like the Tasman. Rips, a steep shore, a village in the valley. Raglan is the long lefts down the same island. This is the closer, heavier sand.
When.
May to August
Southwest swell in winter. The Tasman does not need a special pulse to be a real beach.

Worth knowing.
- 1. The rips are famous for a reason. Watch a set from the sand. Swim at the flags if you are not surfing.
- 2. Lion Rock splits the beach. South and North are different peaks on the same day.
- 3. Winter is the window. Summer can still have a morning. The wind will try to ruin it.
- 4. The road from Auckland is short and winding. Weekend traffic is part of the trip.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
