The harbour reef
A reef next to the harbour on the south of Cornwall, not Fistral. Porthleven is a heavy peak off the rocks, a clock tower, a takeoff that is not a beach-break holiday. The swell has to be a real pulse. A small day is just the harbour wall.
When.
September to March
West and southwest swell in autumn and winter. It has to be on. A small day is not this wave.
Worth knowing.
- 1. This is not a Newquay beach. Different coast, different wave.
- 2. Watch a set from the harbour. The reef is close and the inside is shallow.
- 3. Autumn and winter are the window. Summer is often the town, not the takeoff.
- 4. Helston is the shop run. The clock tower is the look.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
