Mexican Pipeline, Zicatela
Zicatela beach, Oaxaca. Puerto Escondido is the Mexican Pipeline, a hollow beach break that closes out as often as it barrels. The town is a night town. The rip is not a joke. You come for the barrel photos. You stay if you can handle the dump.
When.
April to October
South swell through the Mexican summer. Hurricane pulses make the heavy days.
Worth knowing.
- 1. The rip next to the peak is how you get out. Swim it on purpose. Do not fight the dump on the sandbar.
- 2. Carrizalillo and the west side of town are the softer looks if Zicatela is not your wave.
- 3. South swell season is when it earns the name. A small day is still a steep beach break.
- 4. The town is loud at night. Sleep is a plan, not an accident.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
