The steps, Shippies
A slab under the cliffs of the Tasman Peninsula. Shipstern Bluff is the steps, a wave that breaks in parts and then all at once. Boat or jet ski from the coast. The walk to the lookout is how most people see it. The water is cold. The sharks are not a story you tell for fun.
When.
May to September
South and southwest swell in winter. It has to be a real pulse.
Worth knowing.
- 1. The Cape Raoul walk is the lookout. That is the right first visit.
- 2. The wave is a boat or ski from the coast. There is no beach paddle from a car park.
- 3. Winter is the window. A small day is just a cliff and a lot of wind.
- 4. This is watch-first water if you are not a regular. The steps are not a metaphor.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
