Jaws, tow-in
An outer reef on the north shore of Maui. Peahi is Jaws, the wave that made tow-in surfing a thing. Left and right, a thick wall that comes out of deep water. The cliff above Maliko is the cheap seat. The channel is how the skis work.
When.
November to March
North Pacific swell in winter. It has to be a solid, long-period pulse.
Worth knowing.
- 1. Watch from the cliff off Hana Highway before you think about a boat. You will see the scale.
- 2. Tow teams and a few paddle chargers. This is not a lineup you join.
- 3. North swell in winter is the only window. Summer here is a different island.
- 4. The road pull-off fills when it is on. Get there early or watch from further back.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
