The Sunset Beach Pro, the current
A North Shore reef west of Pipeline. Sunset is current, backwash, and a peak that moves. It held the winter contest for years. The beach is long. The lineup is not friendly on a west swell.
When.
November to February
West and northwest swell in winter. The peak shifts. Watch a set before you pick a spot.
Worth knowing.
- 1. The rip next to the peak is how you get out. Swim it on purpose.
- 2. West Peak and the main peak are not the same takeoff. Sit and learn which one is running.
- 3. This is a watch-first reef if you are not a regular. Pipeline is next door. That is not easier.
- 4. Parking is on the highway. Same North Shore rule. Nothing on the seat.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
