Sorake, the earthquake reef
A right at Sorake, Lagundri Bay, the wave that put Nias on the map. The 2005 earthquake lifted the reef and changed the shape. It is still a fast, shallow right. The bay is a horseshoe. The takeoff is not a beginner wall.
When.
April to October
Indian Ocean swell in the dry season. The bay holds a range of sizes.

Worth knowing.
- 1. Watch a set from the beach at Sorake. The reef is closer than it looks.
- 2. The earthquake changed the wave. Do not trust a film from before 2005 as a map.
- 3. Dry season is the window. A small day is still a sharp right.
- 4. This is a long way from Padang. You come for the week, not the afternoon.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
