Pichilemu, Chilean big wave
A left under the cliffs at Pichilemu. Punta de Lobos is Chile's postcard point, a long wall on a small day and a serious big-wave reef when the south Pacific is on. The headland is a park. The water is Humboldt-cold. The town is still a town.
When.
April to August
South Pacific swell in the Chilean winter. The point holds more than the beach.
Worth knowing.
- 1. The lookout on the headland is the first stop. You will know the size before you walk down.
- 2. Small days are a fun left. The big days are a different wave. Be honest about which one you came for.
- 3. The water is cold year round. A spring suit is not a California spring suit.
- 4. Pichilemu town has the beds and the food. The point is a short drive, not a secret.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
