The break.
ShorebreakExpertCrowded
The jetty, Newport Beach
A shorebreak off the west jetty of Newport Harbor. The Wedge is refraction, not a point. South swell hits the rocks and stands up on the sand. Bodysurfers and bodyboards own a lot of the days. A shortboard is not always the right tool.
When.
May to September
South swell in summer. The jetty does the rest. A small day is just a closeout.
Worth knowing.
- 1. Watch a set from the sand before you go near the impact zone. The inside is shallow and fast.
- 2. This is not a longboard wave. On a real south it is barely a surfboard wave.
- 3. Summer is the window. Winter northwest is a different ocean on this jetty.
- 4. The Balboa peninsula is the town. The Wedge is the west end, next to the harbor mouth.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
