The flagstone, Caithness
A flagstone reef on the north coast of Scotland. Thurso East is the European contest reef, cold water, a harbour town, a castle on the other side of the bay. The swell is from the north. The wetsuit is the whole story.
When.
September to March
North swell in autumn and winter. A clean morning is rare and better.
Worth knowing.
- 1. This is not a beach-break holiday. The reef is shallow and the water is Arctic-adjacent.
- 2. The castle headland is the look. You will know the size before you paddle.
- 3. Winter is the window. Summer is long daylight and a thinner sea.
- 4. Thurso town has the beds. The reef is the east side of the bay, not the harbour wall.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
