Pachia Ammos, west Crete
A long white-sand bay on the west coast of Crete, under Gramvousa. Falassarna is the island beach people drive from Chania for. Wind-swell more often than a groundswell. The sand is Pachia Ammos. The ancient harbour is up the hill. Summer is the melt. A pulse in autumn is why you bring a board.
When.
October to March
West and southwest pulses. Wind-swell is the usual day. A clean autumn set is the one you remember.
The lineup.
Pachia AmmosLimeniskos
Worth knowing.
- 1. This is a tourist beach in summer. The lineup is quieter when the loungers go away.
- 2. Limeniskos is the wind corner. Kite and sail use it more than a shortboard.
- 3. The old city of Phalasarna is above the north end. Walk it after the session.
- 4. Chania is the airport town. Kissamos is the last stop before the descent to the bay.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
