Megali Ammos, the Meltemi
Two beaches in one bay on the north of Tinos. Mikri Ammos is the sheltered family cove. Megali Ammos is the open sand, the one locals call California, the one that takes the Meltemi. A surf school sits on the beach. Drakonissi sits offshore and looks like a dragon if you squint.
When.
June to September
North wind-swell when the Meltemi is on. A cleaner pulse is rarer and better.
The lineup.

Worth knowing.
- 1. Megali Ammos has currents when the wind is up. Watch a set from the sand before you swim it.
- 2. Mikri Ammos is the organised beach. Do not mix the two if you came for a quiet paddle.
- 3. The road is through Komi. Tinos Town is about fifteen kilometres south.
- 4. Summer is the wind season here. Autumn is quieter water and fewer boards on the beach.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
