Niterói, the heavy beach
A short granite bay in Niterói, across the water from Rio. Itacoatiara is the heavy beach of the state. Fast, hollow, a quick drop. Costão, Meio, Pampo. Bodyboarders own the middle on many days. Shock is the rock on the other side of Prainha, a different wave, a different risk.
When.
April to September
South and southeast swell. The bay focuses it. The granite holds the shape.

Worth knowing.
- 1. This is not a learn-to-surf beach. The drop is fast and the inside is shallow on a drain.
- 2. Prainha is the sheltered cove to the right. Do not confuse it with the main bay.
- 3. Shock is behind the rock. Rocks in the takeoff. Locals only unless you were invited.
- 4. Niterói is a city trip from Rio. The beach is in the oceanic region, not Guanabara Bay.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
