Puerto Viejo, the Caribbean
The Caribbean reef at Puerto Viejo, not a Pacific point. Salsa Brava is a hollow takeoff on coral, a town street, a wave that is not a first morning. The Caribbean winter is the window. The Pacific side of Costa Rica is a different trip.
When.
December to March
North swell in winter. A small day is just the reef in front of town.
Worth knowing.
- 1. This is not the Pacific. Different ocean, different season, different wave.
- 2. The reef is shallow and close. Watch a set from the street before you paddle.
- 3. Winter is the window. The rest of the year is often the town, not the takeoff.
- 4. Puerto Viejo is the town. Cahuita is the next name up the coast.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
