La Punta, Coiba
A fishing village on the Azuero, six hours from Panama City, that became the country's surf town. La Punta is the right on the reef. El Estero is the beach next door. Coiba is the park you boat to. The road is long. The swell is the reason people stay.
When.
April to October
South swell in the wet season. A west pulse in the dry months can still light the point.
The lineup.
La PuntaEl Estero
Worth knowing.
- 1. La Punta is the wave you came for. El Estero is the one you learn on.
- 2. The reef is shallow on the inside. Watch a set from the rocks before the first paddle.
- 3. Bring cash. The town still runs on it.
- 4. Coiba is a different day. Boat, park rules, and water that is not a surf session.
Go.
Before you paddle.
- 1. Check local conditions before entering
- 2. Always surf with a buddy
- 3. Know your limits and skill level
- 4. Watch for rip currents
- 5. Respect local surfers and rules
