The west side of Oahu, not the South Shore postcard. Makaha is a reef that holds a winter pulse, Buffalo's contest, a town that still feels like a town. The Bowl is the name people use when it is a real west. This is not Waikiki.

November to March
West and northwest swell in winter. A small day is just the west side beach.
Worth knowing.
- 1. This is not Waikiki and it is not the North Shore circus. Different coast, different morning.
- 2. Watch a set from the sand. The reef is close when it is on.
- 3. Winter is the window. Summer is often the other side of the island.
- 4. The town is Makaha. Do not treat the whole west side as one peak.
